近年，化石燃料の枯渇等の問題により再生可能な植物由来の資源を利用するバイオマスエネルギーへの関心が世界規模で高まっている．今回の調査の目的は，第１に，島嶼地域という特殊な環境下で，現在ハワイ諸島がどのようなバイオマス利用の対策を行っているか調査すること．第２に，観光業の発達したハワイ諸島において，観光業の発展がバイオマス資源にどのような影響を与えているか調査することである．
　今回の調査は，ハワイ諸島の主要４島（カウアイ島，オアフ島，マウイ島，ハワイ島）で行った．カウアイ島での現地調査ではサトウキビのプランテーションがコーヒーのプランテーションへと変わっている現状を確認した．また，マメ科植物による窒素固定を利用した樹木栽培システムについて研究している企業の視察を行った．マウイ島では製糖工場とパイナップルのプランテーションの見学を行い，バイオマス利用について調査を行った．
　ハワイにおけるバイオマス資源の利用はまだ発展途上といえる．しかし，島嶼という環境下で沖縄と抱える問題に共通点が多く，今後の沖縄の環境・観光の面で参考になる部分も多い．
Abstract
　　In recent years, interest of biomass as renewable energy is rising to all over the world. Aim of this research is mainly 2 points. First point is research that Hawaii is using what kind of biomass and what kind of system. Second point is research whether development of tourism influence biomass energy in Hawaii where is developing that.
　　The research has made in main 4 islands (Kauai, Oahu, Maui, Hawaii). In Kauai, many sugarcane plantations have confirmed that was changing coffee plantations. Then, study has made about the tree growth system what utilize process of nitrogen fixation. In Oahu, The meeting has made with state of Hawaii staff about agriculture, tourism and biomass energy. Then, another meeting has made about new energy and tourism in University of Hawaii’s. In Maui, research has made about using biomass in factory of sugar manufacture and pineapple plantation. In Hawaii, research has done about new energy about renewable energy.
　　In Hawaii, using of biomass energy is undeveloped yet. However, environment and tourism problem resemble Okinawa’s it. Thus, Okinawa should refer to Hawaii on some side.
